decorative lamp shades

Lampshades don't always have to be white (or my much preferred black with gold foil interior).  These sconce shades in a house decorated by talented Katie Ridder are a reminder of that fact and add such a nice detail, or layer, to the room in question.  Ridder is wife to architect Peter Pennoyer; talk about the designing duo of talent!

Chateau de Malmaison tour

Image
While in Paris we visited a spectacular chateau known primarily as the home to Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte, the  Chateau de Malmaison . Josephine purchased the dilapidated country estate in 1799 while Napoleon was at war in Egypt and undertook a major renovation to bring the chateau up to date and to the style of the day. From 1800 until 1802 this was the new Versailles, the seat of French power, as Napoleon and his bride ruled from the newly renovated chateau. This was really Josephine's home and she lavished all her attention (and most of Napoleon's money) on the chateau and gardens. After their divorce (as she was unable to have children) she kept the house with a large pension and after her death in 1814 Napoleon returned to Malmaison for one last visit before being exiled in 1815. Talk about love stories! Malmaison is mostly known for its gardens, particularly roses which were JUST past their peak on my visit (June 6). The naturalistic gardens feature hundreds of vari...

Making LA Modern: Craig Ellwood architect

Image
While I rarely feature modern design here at ArchitectDesign that does not mean I don't have an appreciation for the style. Rather I think as in anything, quality matters, and so much of what you see that passes as 'modern' is just poor and lazy design. However there are modern architects whose work makes my heart swoon: one of these is mid-century LA architect Craig Ellwood .  Ellwood took the formal modernism of Mies van der Rohe (another architect I greatly admire) and added some California casualness. Next month (April 2018) Rizzoli is releasing a new book on this modern master entitled Making L.A. Modern: Craig Ellwood - Myth - Man - Designer  by Michael Boyd with stunning photography by Richard Powers  seen here in this post. Modernism is rooted in details and that is what so often breaks a design for me.  These houses built by Ellwood in the 50s and 60s have all of the warmth of more traditional architecture and all of the detailing of grand classical archite...

The grand Willard Hotel DC, some historical surprises

Image
Most people here in DC know of the Willard : one of the grand dame hotels of the city which one assumes have been there forever. However what most probably don't know (I for one did not) is that the current hotel is actually mostly a recreation of the historic space! We recently hosted a tour of the hotel with our ICAA chapter and the hotel historian had some eye opening surprises for us. Many of the beautiful details which appear to date to the hotel's rebuilding in 1901 when the beaux arts style hotel was built actually date to 1986! Lets back up here. Yes the hotel is historic. Like many hotels however it has been renovated and rebuilt almost continuously since its founding in 1818 (the year is a stretch but is when a hotel was first built on this site). Above is the lobby as it appeared in 1950. One recognizes the overall space but decoration and mid-centuryisms are the focus. And above is how the lobby appeared in 1984! This area of Washington suffered greatly during the...
